Dr. Michele Ming BSc, McOptom, FAAO, A.A.

Dr. Michele Ming is the founder of Mings Optical located in Georgetown, Guyana, South America. She was born in Guyana, where she completed her high school education at St. Rose’s High School and Queens College.
Her almost three decades of optical knowledge and experience began at Bradford University in the U.K. where she graduated in 1984 with her Degree in Optometry. She is a member of the British College of Optometrists and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. She returned to Guyana to begin her optical career and after a few years, she opened her practice in 1990.

She is the founder President of the Guyana Association of Optometrists (GAO) and past President of the Caribbean Association of Optometrists (CARIOA). The GAO was also approved as a member of the World Council of Optometry. When the first Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Program in Guyana was established at the Guyana Public Hospital, she was the volunteer resource person to train the Optometrists to use the fundus camera and the Eyepacs grading system using the International Clinical Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Edema Disease Severity Scale. She joined a group of Optometrists from Connecticut and Optometry students from the University of California, Berkeley on an Eye Care outreach with the Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) –Connecticut Mission to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. As President of the Guyana Association of Optometrists in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, she helped to organize the Joint Mission Medical Outreach in Guyana between the Optometry students of the University of Guyana and the University of the West Indies. The following year, they were joined by the Optometry students of the University of California, Berkeley, and provided examinations and free spectacles to several underprivileged communities in Guyana.

She constantly updates her knowledge by attending Vision Expo Conferences, Seminars, and Workshops in the Caribbean and Internationally. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the Scleral Contact Lens Society of America, Her other certifications include Ocular Therapy, Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Therapeutic Management of Ocular Disease, Southern College of Optometry, Memphis, Tennessee, and Trinidad and Tobago Optometric Society and Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents, Nova Southeastern University, Florida, USA.

She is involved with philanthropic endeavors both through Mings Optical, Mings Products, and Services where she is a Director and a Rotarian. Rotary organizes annual Medical Outreaches including dental and eye care in many rural communities in Guyana. She has conducted several vision screening programs for school children with the Ministry of Health and at private schools. She has a long-standing association with the Lions Club on World Sight Day in October annually to provide eye testing and spectacles for school children. She was the representative for ALDOO, Optometric Organization in Latin America of the World Council of Optometry on the Legislation, Registration, and Standards (LRS) Committee.

In recognition of her service to the Guyanese community, she was awarded the National Award, the Golden Arrowhead of Achievement (A.A.) She is the proud mother of four children, all professionals, one of whom is also an Optometrist specializing in Cornea and Contact Lenses.
